Sayaka Ganz says she was inspired by Japanese Shinto beliefs that all objects have spirits and those that are thrown out “weep at night inside the trash bin.” With this vivid image in her mind, she began collecting discarded materials — kitchen utensils, sunglasses, appliances, toys, etc. — and upcycling them into works of art.

Spencer Finch - 366, Emily Dickinson’s Miraculous Year (2009)
This work is based on Emily Dickinson in 1862, when she wrote 366 poems in 365 days. It is a real-time memorial to that year, which burns for exactly one year. The sculpture is comprised of 366 individual candles arranged in a linear sequence, each of which burns for 24 hours. The colour of each candle matches a colour mentioned in the corresponding poem. For the poems in which no colour is mentioned, the candles are made out of natural paraffin.
If you’re a fan of my novel, THE DARK WIFE (the YA, lesbian retelling of the Persephone myth), WOW do I have some SPARKLE for YOU. One of my dearest friends is Laura Vasilion, the awesome photographer behind Vasilion Photography, and the lovely lady who photographed our wedding. She decided that, for my Yule present, she would put together a SURPRISE photo shoot based on THE DARK WIFE, retelling the novel in ten to twelve gorgeously sumptuous photographs. I found out about the surprise on Saturday morning and cried so many happy tears. Seeing my work translated in such stunning, inspiring photography is one of the most inspiring and humbling things I’ve ever experienced. I’m grateful beyond words and so touched…gah. ;-; ♥ ENOUGH OF MY MUSH—here is the first photograph…the beginning, with Persephone. ♥
I WAS NOT A FAN OF IT YET BUT NOW I WANT TO BE
